Home/Surgical Procedures/Face/Forehead Reduction Surgery

Length: 1 – 5 hours (this applies to all facial procedures)
Anesthesia: IV Sedation
Inpatient/Outpatient: Outpatient
Potential Side Effects/Risks: Swelling, bruising, numbness, nerve and muscle weakness Principal Benefits: Reduction of a disproportionately large forehead; a more balanced facial aesthetic; a lower hairline

A forehead reduction is a surgical procedure that can address a prominent forehead and achieve a more balanced aesthetic. Like a brow lift, forehead reduction surgery targets the upper third of the face in the area surrounding the hairline; however, a forehead reduction is unique in that it specifically aims to address a disproportionately large forehead, as well as contour the appearance of the forehead in general.*

If you are looking for a surgical procedure to address an overly large forehead – which can be the result of genetics, hair loss, or previous surgeries – we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our experienced plastic surgeon, Carrie A. Houssock, MD, FACS.

Who Is a Candidate for Forehead Reduction Surgery?

Candidates for forehead reduction surgery are typically individuals who are self-conscious or unhappy with the size of their forehead. Individuals who have a naturally high hairline may also opt for this surgery to achieve a lower hairline in addition to a smaller forehead. In fact, hairline lowering and forehead reduction procedures are frequently combined.

Otherwise, as with any surgery, candidates for forehead reduction should be in good overall health with no underlying conditions. During your consultation, Dr. Houssock will evaluate your specific circumstances, discuss your goals, and determine whether you are best suited for this or another potential solution.

What Does the Forehead Reduction Procedure Entail?

Forehead reduction is typically performed under IV sedation in an outpatient setting. While incision placement can vary depending on the patient’s hairline and the desired outcome, Dr. Houssock will generally make the incision just in front of the hairline, extending from one ear to the other. An additional hair transplant may be suggested in order to further lower the hairline or conceal the scar as a second stage.

She will then carefully loosen and move the scalp forward to the desired position, removing any excess forehead skin as needed to fit the new forehead and hairline position. Recovery times will be contingent upon your case; however, patients can usually expect the healing process to take about two to three weeks.
