Breast asymmetry, congenital differences, and corrective breast procedures pose special challenges to the patient and plastic surgeon. While no two breasts on the same individual are identical, in most cases the differences are so minimal that different surgery on the right and left side are not needed. However, when these situations arise, an individualized approach is key and great time is dedicated to analysis of the options available. In addition, in-depth patient discussion regarding goals and expectations is conducted. Asymmetry, cosmetic, and functional problems can also occur following previous surgery on the breasts. This can occur following the operation itself or as a result changes in the breasts themselves following pregnancy, weight gain or loss.
